My summer was off to a great start, I was becoming an adult and starting my new life. I had just graduated high school and started my new job at Tim Hortons while living in Canada with my aunt and cousins. Although I was not close to my Uncle Auntime, whenever we were together, it was as if time never had passed. When I was younger, he used to take my siblings and me to church, bring us shopping, and occasionally take us to the park. It was always a fun time hanging out with Auntime, mostly because he would reward us with money at the end of our play dates. As we grew older, I would see him less and less, and I always wondered why. On the other hand, my Uncle’s wife, Yva, treated us like her own children, since she was unable to have children because of her fertility problems. Once we reached our pre-teen years, the visits and phone calls started to stop and she too became more distant. When I used to go and visit them on weekends, Yva and my uncle were always warm and loving towards each other. Whenever my uncle was hungry, she would cater to his needs and always made sure he was okay.She would go the extra mile and beyond for him. After a while, I began to realize a shift in their marriage. It had started with my Uncle and Aunt sleeping in different rooms. Then my Uncle began not coming home for days at a time. My Aunt had started to resent my Uncle and I had noticed her heart becoming bitter. It was as if she didn’t love anymore. Years later in 2012, the family had learned the truth about my Uncle’s constant days out the house and trips to Haiti. For years, he had kept his mistress and two kids a secret from his family and wife. After hearing the news, Yva had collapsed on the floor breaking everything in her way. She had crawled into the fetal position, yelling for her mother to come back from the grave and save her from her misery. Watching Yva go through all that pain was devastating. She believed she could not live without this man, meanwhile he was vacationing in Haiti, loving another woman and living a double life. In 2014, Auntime was diagnosed with Prostate cancer. At the time, I was still holding a grudge against him for the pain he had put my Yva through, so I did not bother checking up on him and his well being. He was dead to me. Although Yva wasn’t completely healed, Yva had decided to forgive him and gave up her job to be his caregiver 24/7. While taking care of him, she also became a step-mother to both of his children. Even though Auntime had put Yva through hell, she had made a vow to stick by his side through sickness and through health. Later on this past summer I had noticed my sister, who was also Auntime’s goddaughter, and mother began to visit numerous times every week. My mother had later on explained to me that Auntime was in his fourth stage of cancer. On June 20th, 2015 I had finally went to go see Auntime with my mother. As I walk in the crowded apartment, I had noticed a body lying on a pop-up bed. The body had looked like the malnurtured kids from the commercials on TV. His ribs were emerging from the sides of his body. He could barely communicate when spoken to. Like a baby, he had to make sounds to tell people what he wants. As I finally moved my eyes to his face, all the flashbacks began to pop-up in my head again. Tears started swelling up in my eyes and I began swimming in my tears. I was so concerned with how Auntime had ruined my life that I did not realize that his days were limited. Instead of spending his final days holding a grudge, I could have sat right near him reminding him of all t he times we spent together. Three days later, Auntime had finally taken his last breath. Watching Auntime’s life spiral out of control and watching him die had made decide to live my life with no regrets and to it’s full potential. It also persuaded me to have a career in neonatal nursing. Watching death had made me appreciate bringing life into the world and brand new beginnings.

Superstitions of Huck Finn essays In The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn Jim and Huck use and believe in many superstitions. There are many examples from the book that show this in the characters. Most of the superstitions are very ridiculous, but some actually make a little sense. In the first example, Huck seen a spider was crawling on his shoulder and he flipped it off and it landed in a lit candle. It shriveled up and died. Huck said it would fetch him some awful bad luck. He got up and turned around three times and crossed his breast every time. Then he tied up a little lock of his hair with a thread to keep witches away. He says that the ritual he did was for losing a found horseshoe and did not know if it would work. These superstitions and remedies seem pretty far-fetched and it is hard to say where they originated, but I would have to say they originated down South. I think it originated down south because I am from up North and I have never heard any one speak of those superstitions. Huck believes in these probably because he grew up with them and they were always taught to him and he is so ignorant he does not know better. One morning Huck turned over the saltcellar at breakfast. He went to throw the salt- cellar over his left shoulder to cancel the bad luck, but Miss Watson stopped him. All day he wondered when something would fall on him and what it would be. This all implies that Huck thinks something is going to fall on him, because of his accident. I have heard about bad luck from spilling salt so I think this Superstition started in the North or maybe it was just popular and spread quickly. Her brother-in-law, Rev. John Woodbridge had taken a manuscript of her poems to London, in 1647 and had them published without her authorization. Many think the reason he did this was to prove that females could be educated, write and published without coming into direct competition or becoming inferior to men. Bradstreet was caught wholly off-guard and was a little embarrassed too, not by her work itself but simply by the publication of it. This paper will explore how these elements/themes have been used in the novel to keep the story interesting and intriguing. Discussion The fact that the author uses Victor Frankenstein who is the victim of the monster’s horrific actions makes the story very interesting and easy for the reader to follow the events that unfold in the story. Shelley allows Victor Frankenstein to narrate his personal life experience in the novel and how his interest and obsession in science turned tragic when he became the target of horrific actions of the monster he created. In the beginning of the story, the novel explains how Frankenstein ended up in a ship that was being used by an English explorer Robert Walton. Walton’s ship became a refuge for Frankenstein who was ill. Though Frankenstein was in a poor health condition when he was taken into Walton’s ship, he was able to recover and narrate his personal life story and experience with the monster he had created. This element allows the readers to understand how and why the events that are described in the story occurred. The narration brings out the emotions and feelings of the characters that were triggered by the events that unfold in the story . Frankestein’s narration about the suffering that his family was going through as a result of the monstrous acts of the creature that he created is a clear indication of how the close relation between Frankenstein and victims of the acts affected the tragic events and horrific events that befell them. For instance, his father’s health was greatly affected by what was happening to the family members and friends. He was greatly affected by the deaths of Justine and William. Elizabeth who later married Frankenstein on the other hand became very sad. She failed to take delight in her ordinary occupation and was in tears. Her happiness vanished and the sorrow created by the horrific deeds of the monster removed her dearest smiles from the face. According to Frankestein,Elizabeth could no longer see the world as it was because of the miserable death of Justine Moritz whom she was convinced was innocent. Frankestein points out that he listened to Elizabeth’s opinion about what was happening with great agony. He considered Elizabeth to be a gift of fortune and was worried that the monster could take her away from him. When the monster eventually killed Elizabeth, Frankinstien was devastated. And through the story explains how he chose to deal with despair and sought relief through change of place as well as bodily exercise. Unfortunately, rather than bring him self satisfaction, the creation of a monster brought him hopelessness, fear and remorse for all the horrific deeds it got involved in. This triggered monstrous actions of the creature which sought revenge against its creator and marked the beginning of a cycle of destruction whereby both the monster and Frankenstein pursued each other and hatred between the two continued to grow (Mellor, pg. 73). Conclusion The Frankestein, written by Mary Shelley is one of the most famous novels written by the author. As a result, the book has succeeded in attracting many readers to read the book. There are various key elements/themes in the book that have made the book very popular for both scholarly and lay audiences . These elements include the narration of the story by Victor Frankenstein who became the victim of the monsters’ revenge actions, the horrifying experiences expressed in the book and the use of science fiction. So as we prepare for the next century, we must recognize that there are many problems that we must alleviate before this world can become a better place.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   It may well be that the nation cannot survive--as a decent place to live, as a world-class power or even as a democracy--with such high rates of children growing into adulthood unprepared to parent, unprepared to be productively employed and unprepared to share in the mainstream aspirations.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   Various programs are springing up to help children. However, like the welfare program, for the most part these programs are aimed at alleviating symptoms rather than correcting the cause of the problems. More prisons, more policemen, gun control, the FBI, and V-chips to block violent programs on TV will never stop crime and violence. When we devote time, money and effort toward problems and symptoms -- without correcting the cause -- the problems and symptoms grow and spread like creeping crab grass.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   But as an individual, what can one do? The answer is simple. All one has to do is love. Love is the solution to all of the social problems in our society. Adequate love will eliminate evil, crime, violence, mental suffering, the suffering of innocent children, dysfunctional families, the break-up of families, restlessness, discontent, unhappiness--all that is ugly, deplorable, and destructive.      Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚  Ã‚   But before one can love others, one must learn to love himself. The Genographic Project I. INTRODUCTION A. (attention grabber): Everyone here probably knows what ethnicity you are, where your immediate family came from, or maybe can even trace your great-great grandparents. But what if I told you that you can find out where your ancestors came from tens of thousands of years ago from using this! (hold up a cotton swab) B. (thematic statement): Today I will be talking to you about The Genographic Project and what it has discovered in terms of ancestry. C. (establish significance/credibility): National Geographic has been conducting the Genographic Project since 2005. Consider the following article: Informative Speech on African CultureThey have been collecting DNA samples from people, and by studying and grouping the genetic markers people possess, it can be determined which path your ancestors took when populating the world! It can answer why we ended up where were are, and why there is a wide variety of colors and features amongst humans. Now, what I am going to be talking to you about today is National Geographic’s Genographic Project only, because the scientific community has not come to a concensus that their findings are valid, and the project is still ongoing. (main point #1): In 2005, National Geograph ic Genographic Project was launched. a. According to National Geographic News. Com, Dr. Spencer Wells (pic)and a team of scientists are using technologies to uncover the truth of our genetic roots.They are analyzing patterns in DNA from participants worldwide that can tell us where we came from. He created the project to further validate his previous research about where humans came from. According to Genographic Project website, So lets get into a little science†¦here’s how it works: Fathers pass on Y chromosomes to their sons, and for Mothers and daughters, its different. Mothers pass mitochondrial DNA to their daughters, and their sons.This â€Å"genetic code† becomes varied through the generations through occasional mutations. When a mutation occurs, it becomes a marker that can b e traced, and serve as genetic signposts for tracing evolution. Scientists, like Dr. Wells, can actually follow markers through time and determine the earliest ancestor for each marker. These markers in our genes can also help us to chart human migrations from Africa to other continents. They took DNA samples from various people and contributed the samples to the project. (pic) They were able to chart a road map of sorts to identify the roots that people took when they migrated out of Africa, by grouping the markers they found in the DNA that was collected. History of Japanese Painting Odano Naotake Essay

Odano Naotake (1759 – 1780) was a painter from the Akita Ranga art school. This art school was a by-product of the ‘rangaku’, the ‘Dutch learning’. Rangaku was an important movement in eighteenth-century Japan. It is the study of Holland and the Dutch during the time that the Dutch trade post on Desjima the only connection was with the outside world and the west. Through this contact, Japan stayed informed about Western developments, such as health care and other technologies. This made Japan capable of fast modernization after the opening of the country in 1854. The Rangaku painters painted traditional Japanese themes with the use of Western techniques. The difference from the traditional paintings was the use of shadows, perspective and reflections. The painters also started using the color blue for the sky and sea. Naotake was also influenced by this new intellectual movement through Hiraga Gennai, a natural scientist and student of the Rangaky. He inspired Naotake to study these new Western painting methods as well. He moved to Edo (Tokyo) to continue his studies there. Through contacts with other painters, Naotake mastered the painting of ‘bird and flower’, which is a traditional Jananese style painting with the use of Western perspective and depth. These methods brought these paintings to a higher level, more than just decorations. Naotake also illustrated Japan’s first anatomy book, the Kaitai shinsho. This book was a Japanese translation of the Dutch book â€Å"Ontleedkundige Tafelen†, which was imported from Holland. Together with Gennai and Lord Satake Shozan (1748-85), Naotake started the Akita Ranga school of Art. When Gennai was arrested for killing a student and died shortly afterwards, Naotake was send away from his post in Edo. These developments made the school fall apart. ? Works Cited Johnson, H.
